Deggendorf Institute of Technology (DIT), the German Cancer Society (DKG) and the University of Medicine, Mandalay (UMM) in Myanmar, which specialises in oncology, are working together to improve the quality of care provided to breast cancer patients at UMM.\r
\r
Background: \r
The number of breast cancer patients at UMM is rising steadily. In order to establish and guarantee the best quality treatment for these individuals, UMM is keen to obtain DKG certification first as a Breast Cancer Centre and subsequently as an International Cancer Centre. This project represents an initial step in this direction.\r
There are no national oncological guidelines in place as yet for breast cancer treatment in Myanmar, nor is there a systematic and standardised system for documenting cases of the disease. \r
\r
Activities:\r\n˗\tJoint analysis of processes, procedures and structures relating to oncology at UMM’s breast cancer centre \r\n˗\tTraining for five facilitators in Germany on topics including the establishment of a tumour board, the creation of a patient pathway, and the development of tumour documentation \r\n˗\tSupport for establishing and evaluating these structures (in person and online) \r
\r
Impact: \r
Through this project, UMM is preparing itself for the certification process, which will also be beneficial to the setting up of a national cancer programme, as it could show how to establish high-quality cancer treatment in Myanmar.
