The partnership between the University of Freiburg Medical Center and the Gonoshasthaya Kendra-Hospitals in Dhaka, Bangladesh, aims to develop intervention strategies and standard procedures for patient care to be provided by the emergency services. Outpatient care in the field of emergency medicine is also to be improved.
Problem: Every year in Bangladesh about 70,000 people die, or sustain chronic disabilities, as a result of medical emergencies such as accidents or heart disease. One reason is that emergency doctors and ambulances sometimes need more than 15 minutes to get to patients.
Main activities: Algorithms and standard procedures are being drawn up for the care of emergency patients, taking into account the context on the ground in Bangladesh. Internships and a training course in Freiburg will be used to train professionals as multipliers. This knowledge will be deepened in a workshop in Dhaka.
Short-term results: A new system for initial care provided by the emergency services and for emergency care in hospitals is to be developed.
Long-term results: Emergency patients are given better care and the number of deaths as a result of inappropriate care administered by ambulance crews is to be reduced.
