The partnership established in 2010 between Kinder- und Medizinhilfe Laos e.V. and the Khammouane Provincial Hospital in Thakhek aims to improve the surgical care provided in the Laotian province of Khammouane.
Background:
The state-run clinic in Thakhek is responsible for the care of the approximately 400,000 residents of Khammouane Province. However, the hospital only has six surgeons and is lacking in medical equipment, which means that the surgical treatment provided for acute injuries is inadequate.
Activities:
- Procuring a mobile X-ray machine
- Three-week training courses for staff on how to use the X-ray machine at local level
- Four-week training course for two Laotian doctors on current surgical techniques in Germany
Impact:
The procurement of the urgently-needed equipment and the implementation of training courses for doctors and nurses are measures aimed at ensuring optimised surgical treatment for the people of Khammouane Province. In the long term, these trained employees will act as multipliers on the ground for other hospitals in Laos in order to safeguard surgical care in the country on a sustained basis.
