The partnership between the Ärzte für Madagaskar e.V. (Doctors for Madagascar) and 20 public health centers (Centre de Santé de Base, CSB) in southern Madagascar aims to improve patient safety and quality of treatment among pregnant women and newborns.
Problem: The basic equipment of the CSBs is insufficient and the hygienic conditions present risks for patients and frequently leads to bottlenecks in the provision of medications. Additionally, lacking training opportunities leads to outdated guidelines and procedures which are rarely followed among healthcare workers.
Main Activities: The project allows for training and educational opportunities among community health workers, midwives, nurses, and doctors in the areas of family planning, pregnancy complications, and indicators for hospital referrals. The improvement of equipment availability and the establishment of treatment and quality standards is achieved through the implementation of standardized quality management.
Short-Term Effects: Through training and technical exchange as well as the implementation of quality standards and the improvement of equipment, the treatment quality of CSBs is improved.
Long-Term Effects: The implemented measures will improve patient safety and security as well as increase the use of services provided by the CSBs.
