The partnership between the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and the Ayder Referral Hospital of Mekelle University in Ethiopia, aim to establish a 3-D training model for heart catheter techniques which will improve the treatment of children and youth with congenital and acquired heart conditions.
Problem: Ethiopia has a young general population; therefore, pediatrics plays an increasing role. In this age group, heart conditions such as rheumatic fever and congenital heart conditions are common. Doctors at Ayder Referral Hospital typically have access to medical devices which could treat these conditions, but lack training to use them.
Main Activities: The implementation of a realistic 3-D training model will improve the education of doctors in pediatric cardiology and in the pediatric intensive care unit at the Ayder Referral Hospital. Ethiopian doctors participate in educational opportunities in Germany and Ethiopia where they will be trained on catheter techniques.
Short-Term Effects: Doctors as Ayder Referral Hospital will gain knowledge surrounding the treatment of heart conditions among pediatric patients.
Long-Term Effects: The treatment of patients in pediatric cardiology and the pediatric intensive care unit of Ayder Referral Hospital will be improved.
