The partnership between Malteser International (MI) and the Kakuma Mission Hospital (KMH) in Kenya aims to improve access to quality emergency medical care and to make the existing ambulance fit for operation.

Context:
KMH currently lacks a functioning emergency department. Seriously ill patients have to be transported 150 km to another hospital for treatment. Even straightforward emergency cases cannot be handled at KMH, often leading to injuries with serious long-term effects or even fatal incidents.

Activities:
- Development of standard procedures for emergency care in accordance with the Kenyan standard for ambulances
- Training courses for 45 doctors, nurses and other specialist staff in emergency assistance and emergency obstetric and neonatal care
- Procurement of consumables for the emergency ambulance
- Evaluation of emergency-services provision and operation

Results:
The continued development of emergency care at KMH and the commissioning of the ambulance lead to higher survival rates for accident victims and emergency patients. Targeted training in mother and child care also reduces mortality rates.
