The aim of the project partnership between the association Health for Uganda\/Africa e.V. and the Ishaka Adventist Hospital in Uganda is to establish a management of emergencies in the partner hospital. The Ugandan hospital serves the population of the surrounding rural area.
Problem: Injuries and medical emergencies are among the main causes of death in Uganda. Even seriously injured patients are often brought to out-patient facilities without an ambulance. Most Ugandan hospitals also lack the infrastructure to provide assistance for medical emergencies.
Main activities: The project partners are expanding the existing emergency medicine unit and procuring medical equipment. Medical staff on the ground are undergoing training in first aid. Some staff are being trained to run first aid courses for other staff. To provide for mobile medical emergency assistance, the German partners are working with Ugandan colleagues to install an ambulance with new equipment.
Short-term results: By expanding the emergency medicine unit, medical emergency measures can be initiated more swiftly and implemented more effectively in the partner hospital.
Long-term results: In the region around the partner hospital emergency, patients see their chances of survival improve.
