The Malawian-German project being implemented by Rhein Main University of Applied Sciences and Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe aims to refine patient safety structures at the Kamuzu Central Hospital. The goal is to implement WHO’s recommendations for ensuring patient safety in perioperative care and obstetric medicine.

Background:
Malawi’s Health Sector Strategic Plan II 2017-2022 focuses on optimising patient safety. Although patient care has improved considerably in recent years, as for example, in the case of infection control, when it comes to preventing and identifying medical errors there is still room for improvement. Safety measures can be implemented with the help of training courses and the training of patient safety ambassadors in the clinical departments.

Activities:
-\tResidency in Malawi to identify the need for adaptation of the WHO recommendations
-\tDevelopment of training curriculum for training local patient safety ambassadors
-\tResidency and training for a delegation of Malawian colleagues as multipliers
-\tImplementation and documentation of perioperative safety checks based on the WHO
recommendations

Impact:
The training of Malawian multipliers contributes to patient safety, especially for expectant mothers, and in so doing reduces maternal mortality in the long term.
