The assisted partnership project between the German organisation Ärzte für Madagaskar and the SALFA Hospital Ejeda in Madagascar plans to achieve a general improvement in patient care and safety at the partner hospital. The plan is to supplement projects already implemented within the scope of the partnership which dates back many years.

Problem: The poor care situation in Madagascar is also reflected in the medical sector. For every 10,000 people there are fewer than three trained nurses. Many doctor’s posts remain vacant and in some rural regions nursing staff provide all medical care for the population. The shortage of specialist staff means that frequently untrained staff are employed, and trained up on the job.

Main activities: The medical staff at Ejeda Hospital are attending a further training programme in the vicinity. The focus is on training two radiology assistants, two anaesthetic nurses and two laboratory technicians.

Short-term results: The partner hospital is to offer better medical care.

Long-term results: The enhanced quality of patient care is to be an incentive for well-trained professionals to stay in the country in the long term to work.
