The continuation of the project between Bonn University Hospital and Sankara Eye Hospital Bangalore aims to expand tele-ophthalmological screening with smartphone-based retinal imaging for diabetic retinopathy. The goal is to expand the programme to include 16 additional facilities.
Background:
India has the world’s largest visually impaired and blind population. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the main cause of blindness in working-age people. While early diagnosis and treatment can prevent long-term vision loss, screening is unavailable to most people in rural areas. Smartphone-based retinal imaging offers a very affordable approach to mobile examination that can be performed digitally.
Activities:
-\tProduction of online e-learning training videos for retinal imaging
-\tProduction of educational videos to provide information about DR and treatment options
-\tTraining of 16 optometrists and optometric assistants
-\tExpansion of the tele-ophthalmology unit at Sankara Eye Hospital
Impact:
Continuing the training courses and expanding the screening facilities will improve health care in rural areas. With the help of online training videos, the expertise of retinal specialists can be tapped and patients can be treated throughout India, despite the COVID-19 restrictions.
