The partnership between the German association Fi Bassar e.V. and the NGO FI Bassar in Togo aims to enhance patient care and treatment, especially among pregnant women and mothers in Bassar Hospital.
Problem: At Bassar Hospital, many mothers die in the wake of childbirth. This is caused by the lack of medical equipment such as ultrasound equipment and electronic foetal monitors (EFMs), leading to incorrect diagnoses and far too frequent caesarean sections. These involve a higher risk of infection because sterile instruments are not always available for the operation and there are issues with hygiene and waste. These factors combine to produce frequent serious life-threatening infections.
Main activities: To reduce infection rates, medical and nursing staff are to be trained in hygiene. Diagnostic equipment is to be procured and staff trained to use and maintain it.
Short-term results: The use of the diagnostic equipment procured is to reduce the number of caesarean sections performed. Improved hygiene is to reduce the rates of post-operative infection and mortality.
Long-term results: All patients at the hospital are to benefit from better treatment and post-operative mortality is to be reduced.
