The University of Leipzig Medical Center and Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in Lilongwe, Malawi, reduce the number of infections resulting from drug-resistant pathogens in patients with burn injuries. \r
\r
Background: \r
Antimicrobial resistance is on the rise around the world and is responsible for an increasing number of deaths from untreated infections. Patients with burn injuries are at particular risk due to their particular susceptibility to pathogen colonisation. A study at Kamuzu Central Hospital identified multi-resistant pathogens in almost 70 per cent of patients with burn injuries at Kamuzu Central Hospital.\r
\r
Activities:\r
-\tCertified online courses and practical training for KCH staff in diagnosing and treating burn injuries in the event of antimicrobial resistance \r
-\tProcurement of currently unavailable antibiotics of last resort and consumables \r
-\tSuitable diagnostics and treatment of 100 patients with burn injuries and signs of infection \r
-\tGathering and analysis of microbial and clinical data \r
-\tDrafting and implementation of treatment recommendations for patients with burn injuries and signs of infection, based on the gathered data \r
-\tRegular ward rounds by experts trained in antimicrobial resistance \r
\r
Impact: \r
More patients with burn injuries and signs of infection receive proper diagnosis and treatment. Improved hygiene practices also prevent more infections.
