The partnership between Klinikum Magdeburg gGmbH and the Big Ada East Hospital in Ghana aims to improve diagnostic and medical care for seriously injured persons and patients in shock at Big Ada East Hospital by installing ultrasound equipment and ensuring its proper use.
Context:
The number of serious road traffic accidents in Ghana is constantly rising. Often, there are no units available for treating patients and most accident victims die. In addition to diagnostic services, there is also a lack of knowledge regarding the use of medical equipment to provide proper treatment for emergency patients.
Activities:
- Procuring ultrasound devices and transport to Ghana
- Providing on-site instruction and training in using ultrasound in emergencies
- Encouraging hospital partners to share their experiences
- Devising and adapting standard procedures and treatment protocols for emergency medicine
- Training, monitoring success and possibly planning follow-on projects in Ghana
Results:
Targeted training of medical professionals leads to more accurate and swift assessment of injuries at Ada East Hospital, which results in lower mortality rates for accident victims in this region of Ghana. The purchased equipment could be used in the long term in subsequent joint projects to diagnose other illnesses.
