The partnership between Klinikum Magdeburg gGmbH and Networking for Hope, a non-governmental organisation in Ghana, seeks to use ultrasound equipment to improve medical care for seriously-ill and emergency patients at the hospitals in Nkwanta and Jasikan.
Context:
Against the backdrop of ever-rising demand for emergency medicine, both hospitals are currently developing capacity for emergency and intensive care. However, due to usable equipment often being in very short supply, acutely ill patients can only be diagnosed to a limited degree. The hospitals are in urgent need of medical equipment and practical training for doctors.
Activities:
- Procuring ultrasound devices and transport to Ghana
- Providing on-site instruction and training in heart and lung ultrasound
- Encouraging hospital partners to share their experiences
- Devising and adapting standard procedures and treatment protocols for emergency medicine
- Training, monitoring success and possibly planning follow-on projects in Ghana
Results:
Targeted training of medical professionals in ultrasound diagnostics leads to more precise and swift assessment of injuries and serious illnesses. This could reduce mortality rates in the Nkwanta and Jasikan regions.
