The continuation of the partnership between the Charité University Hospital Berlin and Hanoi Medical University aims to improve the system of psychiatric care in Viet Nam at provincial level. A training network between Hanoi Medical University and six other Vietnamese clinics is to be set up and a needs analysis for the development of the psychiatric care system drawn up.
Background:
Despite the increasing attention paid to mental health in Viet Nam, the 900 or so doctors working in mental healthcare still fall far short of meeting the care needs of the country’s 95.5 million residents. Moreover, the majority of these doctors have no systematic training in psychiatry, meaning that there is a considerable need for further training and continuing professional development opportunities.
Activities:
-\tHosting focus groups to identify the need for psychiatric care based on different groups (income,
gender, degree to which they live in urban settings)
-\tOrganising seminars on epidemiological studies of mental health disorders, quality of life, stigma
and quality management
-\tTemporary placement of six psychiatrists from the six participating clinics in Berlin
Impact:
The setting up of the training network is designed to improve care capacity nationwide.
The hospital partnership thus has the potential to reach a catchment area of more than 17 million residents.
