The aim of the follow-on project implemented within the scope of the partnership between the Zomba Hospital Projekt e.V. and the Zomba Central Hospital is to continue measures already in place to establish an interdisciplinary emergency medicine unit.
Problem: Malawi does not have a nationwide system of emergency rescue services. Existing hospitals demonstrate shortfalls in emergency care provision within the hospital. Seriously ill patients are generally brought by laypersons with no medical training to the nearest hospital, where they are not given the care they need.
Main activities: Within the scope of the partnership, existing facilities are being remodelled to create a triage room. The emergency medicine unit is being fitted out with the hardware it needs to provide adequate documentation and all staff are to be trained in triage. Staff from Malawi are to undertake internships in Germany during which they will undergo training as multipliers, who will then be in a position to train other staff in Malawi. The partnership provides for the development of standards for emergency care.
Short-term results: Creating facilities for the provision of appropriate care and developing standardised operating procedures for care are to enhance the quality of patient care in the emergency medicine unit.
Long-term results: The newly created facilities and upskilling of staff are to facilitate successful emergency care.
