The partnership between the organisation Doctors for Madagascar and Madagascar’s Ministry of Public Health is helping reduce mortality among pregnant women and newborn infants. Thirty public health centres are involved in the partnership and are to benefit from a long-term ongoing exchange.
Problem: Because of the ongoing political crisis in Madagascar, the maternal and child mortality development indicators have improved only very slowly. The targets laid out in Madagascar’s national development plan have not been achieved.
Main activities: Basic and advanced training is held for community health assistants, midwives, nurses and doctors. The technical equipment is to be improved and treatment and quality standards established using standardised quality management.
Short-term results: Treatment for mothers and newborn infants at health centres in Analamanga region is to be improved by providing basic and advanced training for medical staff and introducing technical equipment.
Long-term results: The quality of appropriate antenatal check-ups and obstetric care is to improve and women are to make more use of these services. A reduction in maternal and neonatal mortality is also to be achieved.
