The partnership project between the Sophien and Hufeland Clinic Weimar gGmbH and the Zomba Central Hospital are working towards the improvement of basic care for trauma surgery in Zomba Central Hospital.
Problem: In Malawi, traffic and work accidents, particularly broken bones, are primary causes of disability. In many cases this leads to poverty among the patient and their families as Malawi has no social system. Although trauma surgery is necessary, few financial resources have been designated to the development and expansion of this field.
Main Activities: Within the project, X-Ray machines and X-Ray aprons as well as anesthesia equipment will be acquired. In addition, Orthopedic Clinic Officers will receive trainings regarding sedation for fracture repositioning. 6 tablets will also be acquired to establish a databank with information regarding treatment options.
Short-Term Effects: The education of hospital personnel about the treatment of broken bones, will improve the care of trauma patients.
Long-Term Effects: The improved treatment of trauma patients will have positive economic impacts on the Malawian population.
