The cooperation arrangement between the German Institute for Medical Mission (DIFAEM) and the Ganta United Methodist Hospital in Liberia aims to enhance obstetrics in the border region between Liberia and Guinea. To achieve this goal, three hospitals specialised in obstetrics are to receive better technical equipment.

Problem: In Liberia and Guinea, many women have their babies without any medical assistance. Because there are frequently no antenatal examinations either, maternal mortality in both countries is a major problem. The situation is particularly critical in the isolated area along the border between the two countries, where none of the larger hospitals has ultrasound equipment to identify potential complications during childbirth at an early stage.

Main activities: Three specialist hospitals in the region are to receive ultrasound equipment. The medial staff will also undertake training in the use and maintenance of the equipment. The training measures will allow professionals to acquire expertise in emergency treatment of complications arising during childbirth.

Short-term results: The improved technical equipment and expertise in the use of that equipment will enable the hospitals involved to offer better antenatal examinations.

Long-term results: Thanks to better medical care, the rate of maternal mortality will decrease in the border area between Liberia and Guinea.
