The Katholische Klinikum Koblenz-Montabaur and the National Orthopaedic Hospital Enugu in Nigeria aim to ensure and enhance the medical care available to polio patients in Nigeria, within the framework of a partnership project. To achieve this, a medical polio centre and an orthopaedic workshop are to be established.

Problem: Many people with polio suffer long-term effects including paralysis or physical impairment. For these patients there is still no adequate physiotherapeutic or orthopaedic care. Above all, there is a lack of orthopaedic aids since Nigeria has very few orthopaedic technicians.

Main activities: Against this background, training courses are to be held with the aim of facilitating a transfer of knowledge on medical expertise and establishing treatment options for patients with conditions resulting from polio. Orthopaedic technicians are also to be trained and an orthopaedic workshop established.

Short-term results: The knowledge transfer and the establishment of the orthopaedic workshop are to help upgrade medical and technical staff and optimise the care available to polio patients at the polio centre.

Long-term results: The quality of life of people living with long-term effects of polio is to be enhanced.
