The focus of the project between Apotheker ohne Grenzen Deutschland e. V., the German chapter of Pharmacists without Borders, and the St. Maurus Hanga Abbey health centre in the south of Tanzania is providing pharmaceutical support to the Hanga health centre.
Problem: In Tanzania, smaller health centres like the centre at St. Maurus Hanga Abbey play a major role in providing care for the population. The quality of treatment at the Hanga health centre, however, suffers from deficits in drug supply. Regular power cuts amplify the problem, since many of the drugs and vaccines need to be refrigerated.
Main activities: During a project visit to the health centre, German partners discuss the appropriate storage of drugs with local staff. Existing stocks of drugs are expanded. Project partners are working together with local experts to draw up a strategy to ensure the financial independence of the health centre and organise the repair of the pharmacy’s solar power plant.
Short-term results: The larger stock of the hospital pharmacy will enhance the quality of patient care. The repaired solar plant ensures that drugs can be correctly stored.
Long-term results: A long-term goal of the project partners is to make the health centre financially independent.
