Since 2016, a total of four new pediatric surgery departments have been established in Ethiopia, one of which was created as part of the DAAD funded JimmaChild project. All these clinics are still in the process of being established and therefore depend on close cooperation with the established pediatric surgery department at the Tikur Ambessa Hospital (Addis Ababa). Furthermore, a common curriculum is missing to regulate the training and define quality criteria. For this reason, the Ethiopian Society for Pediatric Surgeons (ESPS) was founded with the aim of standardising training, networking the clinics and thus ensuring professional exchange. Finally, as the political arm of pediatric surgery, the ESPS is also intended to represent the interests of surgically ill children in Ethiopia. EthioChild wants to support this process and strengthen the knowledge transfer between Ethiopia and Germany through a bilateral exchange of pediatric surgical expertise. For this purpose, joint symposia and workshops on defined clinical conditions are planned.
