The neonatal teams from the University Hospital of Bonn and the Black Lion Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia are collaborating on training programmes as part of a new partnership. The partner hospitals are focusing on perinatal infectious diseases.

Context:
Ethiopia has the second highest birth rate in Africa, yet care for newborn and premature babies is limited. The project follows the guidelines laid down in the Ethiopian Ministry of Health’s Health Sector Transformation Plan II. Staff are keen to learn more about perinatal infection and sepsis, given that mortality rates for these illnesses are particularly high at the Black Lion Hospital.

Activities:
- Tutorials on delivery room neonatal care at the hospitals in Addis Ababa and Bonn
- Cranial-ultrasound and echocardiography courses
- Advanced life support training
- Ventilation treatments and mechanical-ventilation techniques
- Zoom seminars and webinars on topics such as: perinatal infectious diseases and how to prevent them; post-operative intensive care, and correct nutrition for babies

Results:
Neonatal training will be provided to both nursing professionals and doctors. The speciality training curriculum will be expanded to ensure the neonatal training has a lasting impact. This will significantly improve the chances of survival for premature and newborn babies.
