The continuation of the partnership between the German Institute for Medical Mission (DIFAEM) and Hôpital de Yomou in southeastern Guinea builds on the previous project that endeavours to improve obstetric medicine in the region. The project aims to deepen skills in neonatal resuscitation and care.
Background:
In Guinea, over 20% of neonatal deaths are attributed to premature births, and additional neonatal deaths are caused by complications during labour. To reduce overall infant mortality, neonatal care must be improved through the provision of medicine and equipment as well as through training for staff in nutrition, thermoregulation, oxygen application and the management of infections.
Activities:
-\tProvision of essential equipment
-\tRevision and practice of neonatal resuscitation skills imparted in the previous project
-\tTraining of staff in caring for newborn and premature infants
-\tMonitoring of the planned changes
-\tAdvice for the individual hospitals on improving emergency care
Impact:
The implementation of the project activities will optimise emergency care procedures in the long term. Because the project will be implemented in three hospitals in Yomou Prefecture, neonatal mortality will be reduced in the entire catchment area of the region in southeastern Guinea, which is very difficult to reach.
