The hospital partnership between the University Hospital Essen and the University Hospital Alassane Ouattara in Bouaké aims to optimise the care of chronic kidney diseases in Côte d'Ivoire.

Background: In recent years, the numbers of non-communicable diseases have increased in Côte d'Ivoire. The Ministry of Health of Côte d'Ivoire has recognised this development and formulated a national health development plan for the prevention and control of chronic non-communicable diseases. However, chronic kidney diseases, which have a prevalence of 8-12 % worldwide, are hardly considered in this plan. It is estimated that by 2030, approximately 70% of people suffering from ESRD will live in developing countries such as Côte d'Ivoire.

Activity: - Raising awareness of chronic kidney disease through regular information events - Development and introduction of a standardised diagnostic and therapeutic concept for chronic kidney disease - Training in ultrasound diagnostics for kidney disease - Screening for chronic kidney disease in vulnerable population groups

Impact: The population's awareness of chronic kidney disease has been raised. If a disease is suspected, the standardised diagnosis and therapy concept comes into play. Through free screenings and improved therapy offers, the disease can be treated more effectively.
