The association Zomba Hospital Projekt e.V and the Zomba Central Hospital in Malawi have been working together since 1996 and have significantly improved emergency medical care at Zomba Central Hospital since that time. This follow-on project will help them to also establish emergency medical care structures at district hospitals in the surrounding region. \r
\r
Background: \r
Malawi’s emergency medical care provision is underdeveloped, and primary medical care is not generally provided in hospital. The partnership’s previous projects have shown that staff training and the introduction of treatment standards can significantly improve emergency care. \r
\r
Activities:\r\n˗\tDocumenting demand and the space-related, staffing, and technical situation at the district hospitals\r\n˗\tDeveloping standardised procedures to be used by the district hospitals to identify and treat emergency patients\r\n˗\tProcurement and commissioning of monitors, oxygen concentrators and infusion pumps \r\n˗\tShort-term placements at Zomba Central Hospital for staff from the district hospitals \r\n˗\tSupport for training from German project partners in Zomba \r
\r
Impact: \r
Emergency medical care in and around Zomba is improving and the hospitals are working together to train their staff in emergency medical care. \r
Previous achievements in the region will be scaled up to further locations as part of a pilot project.
