The partnership between the Orotta National Referral Hospital in Asmara, Eritrea, and the association German-Eritrean Training Partnership e.V. dates back to 2013. It aims to provide further training in gastroenterology and endoscopy for local medical staff. A national training centre for endoscopy and ultrasound is to be established at Orotta Hospital.
Problem: The health service in Eritrea is seriously under-funded and the country is suffering from brain drain as young professionals leave the country. The government sends them to countries like Sudan or Greece for additional training, but only about half of the student doctors return to Eritrea.
Main activities: An endoscopy and ultrasound unit is being established and developed at Orotta Hospital. It is to be used as a national training centre in order to expand diagnostic and therapeutic capacities.
Short-term results: Training opportunities for junior hospital doctors in endoscopy and ultrasound techniques are to be improved in Eritrea.
Long-term results: The Eritrean health system is to be strengthened in the field of gastroenterology.Brain drain of local doctors is to be prevented by building training capacities inside the country.
