The partnership between the Moldova Institut Leipzig e.V. and the charity foundation Hospice Angelus Moldova is to improve care for terminally ill patients in Moldova by establishing a network for palliative care. The Hospice Angelus is the current leader in Moldova in the field of palliative care. It operates in Balti and Orhei districts.

Problem: In Moldova, care for terminally ill patients, or palliative care, exists mainly on paper. Because of the lack of funding, many hospitals cannot open palliative care units. There is practically no further training available in this field for doctors in Moldova. The lack of care puts a huge strain not only on the terminally ill patients, but also on their families.

Main activities: In the district of Orhei a training centre is being established for palliative care. Staff of the partner foundation undergo advanced training and undertake internships at the KAI-Uniklinik in Leipzig. In close cooperation with the German partners, the Hospice Angelus is establishing a hospice and a specialist library for palliative care. A nationwide network for palliative care is also being put in place.

Short-term results: The Hospice Angelus is to provide better medical, psychological and social care for terminally ill patients and their families.

Long-term results: Palliative care in Moldova is to be strengthened by networking experts and in cooperation with health authorities.
