The continuation of the cooperation between Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the University Teaching Hospital of Butare in southern Rwanda serves to implement antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) in central and peripheral health structures as well as for infection prevention and control in the country.\r
\r
Background:\r
In Rwanda, antimicrobial resistance is a public-health risk potentially making antibiotic treatments ineffective in future. Because most of the antibiotics are used in peripheral health centres, physicians at these centres must be made aware of the existing risks. This is achieved through an AMS programme that promotes efficient use of antibiotics. In the context of the first hospital partnership antibiotics guidelines were developed that are now to be implemented with the help of training courses.\r
\r
Activities:\r
-\tAnalysis of the existing AMS measures with all participating departments \r
-\tAnalysis of the need for AMS in other peripheral health facilities in the district\r
-\tOne-week training for key persons and implementation of the digital AMS guidelines\r
-\tTraining of local AMS trainers who will support peripheral health facilities in future\r
\r
Impact:\r
Implementing the AMS programme and training local trainers will reduce antimicrobial resistance in the partner hospital and its peripheral health facilities in the long term.
