The focus of the partnership between the Institute for Tropical Medicine at the University Hospital of Tübingen and the Centre de Recherche Médicales de Lambaréné (CERMEL) in Gabon is a research-based project to treat fever in children.

Problem: In spite of the efforts to improve opportunities to diagnose and treat diseases like malaria, and thus reduce morbidity and mortality, especially among children, the number of children with fever in the region remains high.

Main activities: Young medical staff from Gabon and the Congo are to receive advanced training in the form of case-based workshops and training courses, as well as helping to disseminate the state-of-the-art guidelines on diagnosis and case management that are to be developed as part of a parallel mentoring programme.

Short-term results: Doctors from the partner institution know about improved diagnosis and management procedures for the treatment of fever in children.

Long-term results: The prevalence of fever in children is to be reduced, and this is to help improve the health status of the young sections of the population.
