The partnership project between the Paediatric Unit of Essen University Hospital and Orotta Hospital in Eritrea aims to put in place an anti-cancer programme for children in the partner hospital and to enhance the diagnosis and treatment of cancer in children.
Problem: In Eritrea there is no specific, adapted treatment for children with cancer, which is why the mortality rate is very high for children with cancer.
Main activities: Against this background, a medical exchange for doctors is to take place in the form of training courses and the use of standardised operating procedures is to be established. Moreover, a patient register is to be introduced in order to monitor the health status of children treated and obtain data on mortality.
Short-term results: By implementing internationally recognised treatment guidelines and upgrading medical staff, treatment is to be optimised for children with cancer.
Long-term results: In the long term, early diagnosis and improved treatment is to reduce mortality among children with cancer in the region.
