The partnership between the Research Center Borstel and the Katutura State Hospital in Windhoek, Namibia. aims to optimise care for patients with lung diseases. All in all, the positioning of Katutura State Hospital as a supraregional care and training centre is to be significantly improved.

Problem: Namibia has the fifth highest incidence of tuberculosis in the world. One fundamental problem is the shortage of lung specialists in the region and the lack of an appropriate curriculum for training junior hospital doctors as specialists.

Main activities: The main activities of the partnership project are to enhance the skills of local junior hospital doctors by means of training courses relating to TB care as well as providing training for laboratory staff. More specialists are to be trained at Katutura Hospital by providing well-founded long-term specialist training.

Short-term results: The partnership is to improve the quality of treatment received by patients with lung diseases at Katutura Hospital.

Long-term results: The health situation of tuberculosis patients and patients with lung diseases in the region is to be improved.
