The cooperation between the CORESZON capacity development project based at the University of Hamburg Medical Center and the grassroots organisation Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) aims to improve community-based psychosocial prevention and health promotion for the residents of Nairobi’s slums. In cooperation with local actors from the health and education sectors and community leaders, community-based prevention is to be implemented with the help of a network of peer-to-peer trainers.

Background:
60 per cent of Nairobi’s urban population live in slums. Living in extreme poverty has serious implications for mental health, but this is stigmatised within society, preventing people from seeking mental healthcare. Moreover, there are very few treatment options available.

Activities:
-\tAdapting the training programme to local resources and needs
-\tImplementing training for six SHOFCO staff to become CORESZON trainers
-\tEight-month practical training period, during which the trainees receive ongoing guidance from the partner organisations

Impact:
By tailoring the training programme on psychosocial prevention and health promotion to local needs, the aim is to break down the stigma associated with mental illness so that more people take advantage of the services available.
