The partnership between the Medical Mission Institute (MMI) in Würzburg and the Bugando Medical Centre (BMC) at the Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (CUHAS) aims to continue the training programme for specialists in anaesthetics and intensive care medicine, and enhance patient care.

Problem: In Tanzania, few specialists and nursing staff specialise in anaesthetics. This is partly because of the lack of training opportunities and the dearth of incentives. Improvements in anaesthesiology are needed to bring this area into line with the capacities of the BMC’s surgical unit and to achieve global and national goals regarding improved health services.
Main activities: Within the scope of this partnership, specialist anaesthetists from BMC are to take part in advanced training and dialogue on diagnostic ultrasound, pain management, intensive care medicine, emergency medicine and project management. Anaesthetic nurses are also to be given specialist courses in anaesthetics and patient safety. Necessary injection equipment is also to be procured.
Short-term results: Doctors and nursing staff are to further develop their specialist knowledge of anaesthetics.
Long-term results: The anaesthetic unit is to be strengthened as part of intensive care medicine and emergency medicine at BMC.
