The hospital partnership between the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Notfallmedizin Fu¨rth e.V. and Association of Ambulance Professionals Uganda (AAPU) Ltd serves to establish certified International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) courses in Uganda. The activities aim to improve emergency care for injured people in Uganda.\r
\r
Background:\r
Accident-related injuries are a major contributor to high mortality rates and long-term disabilities in Uganda. This is due in part to the lack of emergency care and to untrained health workers caring for accident patients. In Uganda, trauma treatment is often performed by first aiders such as the traffic police. These individuals require specialist trauma training to improve emergency care country-wide.\r
\r
Activities:\r
-\tProcurement of training sets and planning of the first training phase\r
-\tImplementation of the first training phase with international instructors, including the ITLS Advanced, \r
Generic Instructor and Duty to Respond courses\r
-\tImplementation of an interim evaluation of how the participants use the skills they have acquired in \r
the workplace\r
-\tSubmission of the application to become an ITLS training centre\r
\r
Impact:\r
Thanks to the new ITLS courses, at least 200 first aiders and health workers are to be trained in two years. Because the course participants come from all different regions, the project has far-reaching impacts on trauma care throughout Uganda.
