The partnership project between the German association Medcare for People in Eritrea e.V. and the Orotta National Referral Hospital, as well as the Eritrean Ministry of Health, will enable a cardiology unit for adults to be established.
Problem: Eritrea has not hitherto had a centre specialised in treating adults with cardiac conditions. Cardiovascular diseases are becoming increasingly frequent, particularly among the urban population, putting a great strain on health services. Currently, cardiovascular disorders are diagnosed on the basis of a physical examination of patients. The few ECGs used in heart examinations are old and are not always operational.
Main activities: The hospital will be fitted out with new equipment, and staff of the partner hospital will be trained to conduct cardiological examinations, so that they can treat patients better.
Short-term results: Thanks to the specialist unit, treatment of patients with cardiovascular conditions can be improved.
Long-term results: Regular training for medical and technical staff is to gear the health system in Eritrea more to the needs of patients with cardiovascular disorders.
