The Evangelische Kliniken Essen-Mitte and Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) in the Malawian capital Lilongwe are working together to introduce minimally invasive diagnostic and treatment methods at the KCH's Gynaecology and Obstetrics Department . The project focuses on knowledge transfer through mutual short-term placements.\r
\r
Background: \r
By introducing endoscopy techniques for diagnostic procedures and minor surgical procedures, the KCH is seeking to reduce the risk of medical complications in gynaecological treatment. The hospital already has the necessary endoscopy equipment, which has been financed by the Norwegian Government. However, the KCH team still lack the expertise required to carry out minimally invasive procedures. \r
\r
Activities:\r
-\tPlacement at KCH for two gynaecologists and one theatre nurse from Essen to evaluate current equipment, the necessary project steps and potential obstacles to the project’s implementation\r
-\tJoint development of a training manual\r
-\tTwo-week placement in Essen for two gynaecologists and one theatre nurse from Lilongwe to train in minimally invasive gynaecological surgery \r
-\tJoint surgical procedures at KCH, including video documentation, with subsequent evaluation and case review\r
\r
Impact: \r
The gynaecologists and obstetricians at KCH can carry out minimally invasive procedures independently, significantly improving the level of medical care provided to patients. In the medium term, the team will train Malawian gynaecologists in minimally invasive surgery.
