The aim of the partnership between the Pius Hospital Oldenburg and the Hospital Mario Correa Rengifo de Cali is to enhance the quality of maternal and foetal care for young women.
Problem: District No. 18 in Cali has a high rate of pregnancy among girls and young women, and a neonatal mortality rate eight times higher than the rest of the city. In many cases deficits can be seen in nursing, which are primarily the result of inadequate management of obstetric emergencies. There are also shortcomings in the prenatal diagnosis of diseases.
Main activities: In the course of the partnership ultrasound equipment is to be procured and technical staff familiarised with the maintenance and repair of the equipment. Doctors and nursing staff, and community health staff are also to be given training in the use of ultrasound, and are to take part in a training workshop.
Short-term results: By extending training and providing additional training courses, the capacities of medical staff are to be developed and the quality of care available to pregnant girls and young women and to newborn infants enhanced, by reducing childbirth-related risk factors.
Long-term results: The mortality rates among pregnant girls and young women and newborn infants are to be reduced.
