The hospital partnership between the Medical Mission Institute (MI) and the Bugando Medical Centre (BMC) in conjunction with three rural hospitals in Kagera Region, aims to provide further training for intensive care nursing staff in the fields of intensive care medicine (ICM) and treatment records. \r
Problem: In Kagera Region in Tanzania a large percentage of the population has to travel a long way to reach a health centre, resulting in high fatality rates among accident and emergency patients. There is also a lack of intensive care nursing staff and few options to train at basic or advanced level in this field.\r
Main activities: First, a needs assessment of critical care facilities in the three remote hospitals will be realized. The information gathered in the assessment will then inform the writing of a critical care curriculum. The ICM nursing staff at BMC will participate in a refresher course about ICM which will also train them to become multipliers in this field. Later, two groups of four nurses from the remote hospitals will be trained for six months at BMC in ICM.\r
Short-term results: Nursing staff in rural hospitals and the BMC specialists are to develop their skills in the field of intensive care medicine and in keeping records of treatment. \r
Long-term results: Treatment available to emergency patients in rural parts of Tanzania is to be enhanced.
