The focus of the partnership between the German association For-Eritrea (Medical Support in Partnership) e.V. and Orotta National Referral Hospital in Asmara, Eritrea, is on treating gynaecological cancer. Standardised procedures for the treatment of affected women are to be introduced.
Problem: Because there is often a lack of continuous treatment, the rate of recurrence in the treatment of gynaecological cancer is very high in Eritrea. The country does not have the specialist professionals and drugs it would need to ensure adequate care for patients with gynaecological cancer.
Main activities: There are plans to establish effective, well-tolerable chemotherapy at the partner hospital. Project partners are concentrating on building the premises in which the treatment is to take place, and on a parallel training programme for preparing anti-cancer drugs for chemotherapy.
Short-term results: Chemotherapy will give more of the affected women at the partner hospital the chance to survive their cancer in the long term.
Long-term results: Orotta National Referral Hospital is a teaching hospital for students of the medical faculty. The newly established treatment methods can thus be passed on to the new generation of medical professionals. The number of staff trained to treat gynaecological cancer will increase.
