The partnership between the German Eritrean Partnership in Training e.V. and Orotta National Referral Hospital endeavours to establish a training centre for endoscopy and ultrasound at the Eritrean partner hospital in the Asmara, Eritrea’s capital. The project focuses on training hospital staff.
Background:
The second leading cause of death in Eritrea is gastrointestinal disorders, which can best be examined with endoscopic procedures. However, Eritrea has no established emergency care using endoscopy, because endoscopic procedures can be performed at only four hospitals in the country.
Activities:
-\tRenovation of the endoscopy and ultrasound unit
-\tFurnishing and equipment for the department
-\tThree-day training course for the technical staff on operating and maintaining the procured
endoscopy and ultrasound units
-\tTraining course at Orotta Hospital for physicians and assistants
-\tThree-day ultrasound course
Impact:
The project improves training for resident physicians. A broader range of training options available in the country itself may prevent local staff from emigrating. The Eritrean health care system will be strengthened in the long term in the area of gastroenterology.
