The hospital partnership between the Charité University Medicine Berlin and the Gash Barka Referral Hospital Barentu aims to establish hygiene standards, monitoring of vital signs and guidelines for the prevention and treatment of infections during delivery, neonatology, and pediatrics.
Problem: Although the care of mothers and children in Gash Barka Referral Hospital has improved little-by-little, hospital-attributed infections still contribute to a high burden of disease. Infectious diseases including Amniotic Infection Syndrome are the primary cause of mortality and morbidity during childbirth and among newborns and children.
Main Activities: Within the project, multiplicator teams will be trained to transfer knowledge and skills to colleagues in the areas of hygiene, monitoring vital signs, and providing treatments for infection. The acquisition of disinfectants, devices and materials to prevent infections will also be supplied.
Short-Term Effects: The knowledge transfer of infection prevention and treatment among mothers and children will improve the care of this target group.
Long-Term Effects: The rates of mother and child mortality in the Gash Barka region will be reduced through improved care among mothers and children in Gash Barka Referral Hospital.
