For more than 10 years there has been a partnership between Medcare for People in Eritrea e.V. and the ENT Clinic Orota Hospital in Asmara, Eritrea. The Medical School is based at Orota Hospital, which is thus responsible for training the entire country’s medical professionals. The project aims to develop Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) care in Eritrea.
Problem: Eritrea has hitherto had only two ENT specialists for a population of 5.8 million. There is also a shortage of anaesthetists. ENT patients thus have little chance of treatment.
Main activities: Within the scope of the partnership, one ENT outpatient clinic has already been established, with an operating theatre. The project promoted by the hospital partnership plans to further develop the technical equipment of the clinic. The partners are together developing training programmes both to train doctors as specialists and to train medical students in the fields of ENT and anaesthetics.
Short-term results: Eritrean experts are to receive basic and advanced training in the field of ENT and anaesthetics.
Long-term results: ENT care in Eritrea is to be developed and ensured.
