The partnership between the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the Gash Berka Referral Hospital in Barentu, Eritrea, supports the establishment of a medical care structure for acutely sick children and adults in the field of accident and emergency and internal medicine.
Problem: The Gash Berka Referral Hospital is responsible for providing medical care for about 800,000 people, but has no properly operational structures for delivering emergency care and for internal medicine.
Main activities: Within the scope of the partnership, a detailed record is drawn up of needs with regard to the technical equipment for emergency medicine and with regard to advanced training requirements. Materials and equipment for emergency care will be provided and staff trained to use them. Theoretical and practical knowledge be delivered by means of half-yearly training courses. Special emphasis will be put on training Eritrean multipliers on aspects of emergency care for adults and children.
Short-term results: The combination of improved technical emergency care equipment and staff training should ensure a better quality of treatment for patients.
Long-term results: The measures implemented are to strengthen Gash Berka Referral Hospital in its capacity as a central provider of medical care for over 800,000 people in the region.
