The partnership between Ärzte für Madagaskar e.V. and the Lutheran Hospital Manambaro SALFA in southern Madagascar aims to improve the quality of patient care in the partner hospital.

Problem: In the south of Madagascar, there is a severe shortage of medical staff. For every 10,000 inhabitants there are fewer than 3 fully trained nurses. In some cases nurses provide all the medical care available to the rural population because doctors’ posts in many areas remain vacant. Many facilities are also in isolated areas, meaning that medical staff are often unable to travel to attend further training courses.

Main activities: The focus of the partnership project is on providing advanced and further training for medical, nursing and technical staff on the ground, as well as communicating expertise on the use and maintenance of medical equipment and introducing hygiene standards.

Short-term results: Further training for national personnel helps enhance patient safety by improving diagnosis and hygiene standards.

Long-term results: Professional upgrading and quality improvements are to help prevent any further losses of qualified staff.
