The partnership project between the German Society for Tropical Paediatrics & International Child Health (GTP) and the University of Dodoma (UDOM) in Tanzania is aimed at improving healthcare for children and newborns in Dodoma.

Background:
Tanzania is making great progress in reducing its child mortality rate, which has fallen significantly amongst children under five – as has its infant mortality rate. Nevertheless, mortality amongst newborns is still high due to the frequency of premature births and a lack of sufficiently qualified staff with adequate specialist expertise.

Activities:
-\tProcuring medical and e-learning equipment
-\tFacilitating the participation of two Tanzanian doctors in the GTP’s annual conference and the intensive course on global paediatric health in 2022 and 2023
-\tRunning two two-week educational and training courses for assistant paediatricians on paediatric care, neonatology, paediatric intensive care and ultrasound imaging
-\tRunning virtual courses on research methodology for assistant paediatricians and young academic researchers

Impact:
The measures taken are aimed at improving healthcare services for children and newborns at Dodoma Regional Referral Hospital and at the UDOM. In the long term, patients from other Tanzanian healthcare institutions will also benefit from the skills of the paediatricians trained under this programme.
