The partnership between Global EMS Entwicklungshilfe gGmbH and the Saint Lucia Fire Service aims to improve the emergency services on the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia by providing targeted training to 160 paramedics in the fire brigade.

Background:
Saint Lucia is a small island nation in the eastern Caribbean with a population of around 182,300. The Saint Lucia Fire Service is responsible for the preclinical emergency care of the entire population. At present, however, the fire brigade does not have any standardised operating protocols with clearly defined roles and lacks adequate training and suitable equipment. This has an impact on the quality and speed of emergency services, which is vital when it comes to saving patients’ lives.

Activities:
- Holding joint workshops to develop a suitable division of responsibilities for paramedics
- Providing training sessions for the continuing professional development of medical emergency response engineers
- Providing further training for 90% of current paramedics
- Holding train the trainer workshops for future trainers

Impact:
The training of paramedics contributes to improved and faster emergency services and to service quality for emergency patients. This serves the island’s entire population as everyone benefits from the improvements to the emergency medical care system.
