The aim of the cooperation project between the association Shining Eyes e.V., based in Flein, Baden-Württemberg, and St. Mary´s Child and Mother Health Care Centre in India is to strengthen health care in Birbhum District.
Problem: In the area surrounding St. Mary´s Child and Mother Health Care Centre, the medical infrastructure is not well developed. In addition to the difficulties in accessing health facilities, the lack of health education is one reason why many people in the area do not seek medical help until they have severe symptoms. The secondary damage caused by untreated diseases is largely responsible for the poor economic situation in the region.
Main activities: Project partners devise information material and organise regular action days on diseases and preventive measures. Workshops on maternal and child health and nutrition are planned for women from the surrounding villages. Free antenatal check-ups are offered for pregnant women along with house visits.
Short-term results: The population is to be better informed about care, various medical conditions, and the need to seek medical care early.
Long-term results: People in Birbhum District are to be encouraged to consult a doctor quickly if they show signs of a disease. This is to improve the overall health situation in the region.
