The continuation of the partnership between the Endulen e.V. society and Endulen Hospital aims to improve women’s, maternal and children’s health in northern Tanzania.
Background:
Endulen Hospital serves around 80,000 people, many of whom belong to the Maasai tribe. Here, many children are born underweight or prematurely and often do not survive their first night. Unmonitored pregnancies, maternal malnutrition and infections during pregnancy are the reason for the complications. That is why hospital staff need to be trained and medical equipment provided. As a precautionary measure, difficult topics such as sexuality and menstruation also need to be discussed with young women since, in Maasai culture, women get married and fall pregnant at a young age.
Activities:
-\tAcquiring a new ultrasound machine
-\tTraining hospital staff and local midwives
-\tTraining young women and female students
Impact:
The aim of the training courses is to significantly increase the birth rate at the hospital and reduce the mortality and morbidity of the Maasai. Cooperation with local midwives is designed to encourage the early referral of complicated pregnancies to hospital. The workshops also provide a platform to learn more about health and lifestyle in Maasai villages in order to optimise the quality of patient care in hospital.
