The Paediatric, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Unit at the Hannover Medical School has a partnership with the Plastic and Paediatric Surgery Units at the Universities of Monastir and Tunis. The aim is to establish a national paediatric burns unit in Tunisia.
Problem: In Tunisia there are no hospitals that specialise in treating serious burns in children.
Main activities: Doctors and specialist nurses receive theoretical and practical further training in the treatment of severely burned children. As part of this education, training videos and e-learning materials are produced in order to roll out the newly acquired knowledge in Tunisia. Structures already in place for adults with severe burns are to be applied also to paediatric patients. Professionals from the German partner hospital are to visit Tunisia and the project is to be presented at the annual specialist congress in Tunisia.
Short-term results: The staff at the Tunisian partner hospitals will be able to treat children with severe burns and perform reconstructive surgery.
Long-term results: Child mortality resulting from burns is to be reduced. The partnership also hopes to raise awareness within society regarding the prevention of scalding and burns among children.
